22133716 SAPPER DONALD FRANKLIIN I joined the army as national serviceman on 21st of April 1949 I posted tp 2 troop,33 Squadron,37 Engineer Regiment at Guilemont Barracks,Cove,Hampshire for my basic 13 weeks training. On completion of my basic training we were posted to Cwrt-y-Gollen,Nr Crickhowell,Breacon. to carry out our Field Engineer training. At Crickhowell i was Promoted to L/cpl. In 1950 we were moved to London to cover the Dock Strike and the Squadron were billited in the Tower of London, having to sleep on the floor of the Bowery Tower.During my time at Crickhowell i put my name forward for Parachute Training.I passed my medical and was was posted to Maida Barracks Aldershot for selection (P Company). After completeing and passing P Company i was sent to Upper Heyford near Oxford for my parachute training. On completion i returned to my unit at Crickhowell. Late in 1950 the Squadron was posted to Roberts Barracks Osnabruck were i was a despatch rider.I was de-mobbed in the UK at Barton Stacey on 26th April 1951.On de-mob i was attatched 109 Army Engineer Regiment (TA) in Cardiff for 31/2 years while on reserve. FUNNY INCIDENT About two weeks into my basic training at Cove, whilst on parade one day,I made my first and last mistake. We were being drilled by L/Cpl Keen who had a very high pitched voice. At the end of one of his commands i mimicked him,but he heard me and halted the troop and asked who had mimicked him.At first i did not own up and he reponded by informing us all to parade at 6pm for further drill.Fearing reprisal from my mates,I owned up,whereupon L/Cpl Keen said "You will still parade at 6 o clock and you Sapper Franklin will be drilling them".Needless to say i didn't do it ever again. |
